WRITE DOWN DEBTS WITH EVERYONE
Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا تَدَايَنتُم بِدَيْنٍ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى فَاكْتُبُوهُ
(Qur’ān 02:282). ‘Yā ‘Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna ‘Āmanū ‘Idhā Tadāyantum Bidaynin ‘Ilá ‘Ajalin Musamman Fāktubūhu’, ‘O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down.’ Sadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.
Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says when you borrow money, make sure to write it down. When you borrow or lend money, make sure to write it down. This applies to everyone, says Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. He ﷻ doesn’t say not to write for siblings, uncles, aunts and friends. Write down for everyone, because mankind both forgets and has ego. Ego can cheat people. When it comes to ego, Halal and Haram are all the same. It sees everything as profit. Therefore, make sure to write it down to avoid problems later.
So many people came to us and also to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim who said, “I lent money to this man and didn’t write it down. We were going to do business and I trusted him and lent him money. But he didn’t give it back. What should I do? They said to go and complain to the police”. We ask from the beginning, “Did you write it on paper?” “No. What should I do now?” Our advice for him to go and drink a glass of water on top of it. That’s it. You cannot get anything back. Because you didn’t carry out the order of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. And this is your punishment that you must carry now. Let it be a lesson for you. We don’t say anything else. Because there is no paper, no document. And if you go to the court, where is your proof? There are so many lawsuits anyway. And until they reach your case, ten years will pass. Even if it reaches after ten years, you won’t gain anything. If you gain, that money will be useless and gone.
Therefore, this is an important thing. Debt is an important thing. Actually, those who take a debt should not think they gain something by claiming to be clever and not paying it back. It has no benefit neither in Dunya nor in Akhirah. It is also said in Qur’an ‘Azimu sh-Shan, when someone dies, so and so is distributed between the heirs. But before that, if there is a debt, it should be paid back. And then what remains from possessions is divided.
Certainly, most people don’t lend money nowadays because of these issues. And when people don’t lend money, people take loans from banks, from here and there. Bank loans have a price no matter if they die or not. That price is some security deposit which they take. But as we said, such naiveness – Sometimes naive means stupid. Because when you don’t carry out the order of Allah ﷻ, it means you have mind deficiency. It is the order of Allah ﷻ and a known matter for people.
The order of Allah ﷻ is beneficial for people. When you write it down, you attain Thawab as you carry out this order. We are carrying out the order of Allah ﷻ. “Come on, we are friends and so on. There is no need”. You must say, “No, it is the order of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. It is written in Qur’an. We must do it”. If they say, “No, I won’t do it”, you can say, “Get out!” That’s it. May Allah ﷻ protect us from the evil of our egos.
Even if they are Hojjah or Hajji, even if they went to Hajj ten or twenty times, they will still obey their egos anyway. We saw this many times. Many people with turbans and beards, Hajjis and Hojjas cheated others. They can cheat people even more. But they are cheating themselves. May Allah ﷻ protect us from their evil. May Allah ﷻ protect us from their evil and the evil of shaytan and our egos insha’Allah. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
