Shaykh Muhammad Effendi tells a story of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim’s about Shaykh Abdullah (QS) in order to give an example of the great humility and perfect adab of our Shaykh for his Shaykh.

As-Salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahu wa Barakatuhu. Madad ya Rasul Allah, Madad ya S. Abdullah Faiz Daghestani, madad ya S.Muhammad Nazim al Haqqani, dastur! Audhu Billahi min al shaytan al rajim, Bismillahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim. Tariqatuna sohbah wa l-khayri fil jamia’.
Mawlana Shaykh says, “bring something to record, that I may speak to it about what I know from the past”. And yesterday, he was telling about GrandShaykh Hz & his practice. GrandShaykh, Shaykh Abdullah Daghestani Hz, Mawlana’s Shaykh, Sultan al Awliya Hz. After isha time he would lock his door & not let anyone in. No matter who comes, he wouldn’t accept anyone. When it is “thuluth al-akhir”, after the two thirds of the night passes, or before that, whichever was his practice, he would wake up.
He had a samovar. He would make the wood fire & prepare the tea in it by himself. Then there was a holy man who was serving him, named Abubakr. He would send him to call Mawlana. He would knock Mawlana’s door. So he would call Mawlana to his presence & give him sohbat. One day he told him that “I have given you 7000 sohbats”. Sohbat.. One day he asked him “where are you going to, O S. Nazim Effendi?” “I am going to the market”. “Go safe & return safe” he told him. “This is also a sohbat” he said to Mawlana. There is a wisdom in everything.
After the last part of the night, he would give sohbat. They would drink tea, they would pray. Grandshaykh would sleep after ishraq & wake up at noon, pray noon.. Mawlana says “we are not able to do that”. Of course Mawlana’s.. Each holy one has a different method, practice. And Mawlana, because of his love for his Shaykh, he wants to apply his practice. He likes to do as he does. And he feels sorry because he can’t do. But of course Mawlana’s.. his practice; there are thousands, tens of thousands of people. He didn’t have the chance to do like his Grandshaykh practice. His service has been different.
But as we said, our Shaykh follows the Sunnah, wants to do everything the Prophet (ﷺ) did. And also wants to do the practices he saw in his Shaykh, wants to do the practices of the Tariqat. He would like to follow but let’s say that it has been a test for him, or it was a different state that was given to him, so he couldn’t do it & he always feels sorry for it.
The great saints never think of what they did as a big deal. Never say “we did great work”. Mawlana keeps saying “we couldn’t do..” But guiding a person is better than everything in this world. Guiding a person to the right path is more khayr/better than all the treasures of the world. So Mawlana has been a means for the guidance of thousands, tens of thousands of people. Still he says “we couldn’t do anything” because of his humility. People should see this attribute. Some people praise themselves to the skies although they do nothing. And of course, no one values such a person.

Today we speak about, Shaykh Effendi. He was telling me, when I come to him, to bring something to record what I say. For today, he was speaking about GrandShaykh, his Shaykh, Shaykh Abdullah Daghestani, Sultan al Awliya. Himself, when isha praying finish, he was lock the door, his door. Nobody can enter inside. No permission, not allowed anybody to come to him, directly after isha. And he was, until the thuluth al-akhir, two third of night when finish, he was wake up & make tea in teapot, fire, special tea called samovar. It is original from Daghestan, or Russia, something like this. And it was giving nice taste for tea. And tea, it is drink of mashayekh. Darawish, they like the tea.
And when tea ready, S. Abdullah Daghestani Hz sending his servant. He is Mubarak, old, he was very old, maybe 90 year old or more. He come and knock the door of Mawlana Shaykh, wake him up: “Don’t be sleep, must be always awake”. Awake meaning, for not forget Allah. After this, Mawlana Shaykh Nazim coming to his Shaykh. And drink tea & make sohbat- S. Abdullah Daghestani giving sohbat to Mawlana. Many years like this. And then he said.. Once, he was saying to him “I make 7000 sohbat for you”. 7000 sohbats, and all he was writing these sohbats, Mawlana Shaykh. And this sohbat, only for Mawlana Shaykh, nobody hear this sohbat after. Give him sohbat, after this..when he was giving this sohbat, maybe it was between 46 until 60, or 60 to 65, something like this. After, when people coming more he was giving sohbat but not sohbat like what he give to Mawlana. And he was all, he writing all these sohbat.
Once Mawlana Shaykh Nazim wanted to go to market to buy something, M. S. Abdullah Daghestani told him, “Go safe, come safe” And he said, this is also sohbat. Only these two words it is sohbat also. Because when you open it one book you can do from this sohbat. And Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q.s), he is not happy with himself. Because “I couldn’t do this what he do- Mawlana Shaykh Abdullah, to sleep after isha, not accept anybody. And after thuluth al-akhir make sohbat with people. I couldn’t do this”. And this is from his humbleness & his love for his Shaykh. Because every Shaykh, he has different.. Allah give him different character, or like, shape. Every Shaykh, he has different wazifa/mission, different..
Even with this, Mawlana Shaykh he is not happy with himself. All the time looking what he do, “it is nothing for me” he says. And he is make people to come to right way, not hundred.. One Hadith saying “if you bring one man to right way, it is better from whole world & what inside”. Mawlana, he not one, not one hundred, one thousand, thousands, hundred thousands bringing to right way. But he is, from his humbleness he says “no, I didn’t do anything”. Allah forgive me”. He is, from his love to Prophet, he is doing everything what Prophet (ﷺ) doing. For loving for his Shaykh, he wants to do the same thing also. But Allah, he is loved servant for Allah. Allah love this people who is humble & saying “we are nothing”. But other people, they are nothing & they making, speaking as they are making whole world for creating world, something like this. And this is rubbish, nobody accept them.
We must look for our Shaykh, and take good manner from him. Alhamdulillah everybody here see him, when he was walking and coming. Even now, with his weakness, he looking for everybody also. Alhamdulillah we are lucky for this, to be with him. Allah give him long life & until we be with him with Mahdi (as) insha Allah. He will be happy with Sham insha Allah.
