Born in Balkh Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi learned from his father, a great scholar of his time. The family left Balkh when it became unsafe and after years of travel settled in Konya. Mevlana became a revered scholar himself, taking over his father’s teaching duties. However he still yearned for knowledge. This was to be granted upon encountering Shams of Tabriz.

As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.  

Audhu Billahi min ash-shaitani rajim. Bismillahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim.  As-salatu wa salamu ala Rasulina Muhammad Sayyidi l-awwalin wa l-akhirin.  Madad ya RasulAllah, madad ya Sadati Ashabi RasulAllah, madad ya Mashaykhina, dastur,  Mawlana Sheikh Abdullah Dagestani, Mawlana Sheikh Nazim al-Haqqani, dastur.

Masha’Allah,  we see these children and  their Sheikh,  making Jalaluddin Rumi way sama.  Whirling, whirling derwish.  This is good for  teaching them good things  from small age,  beginning to learn nice thing.  Because Jalaluddin Rumi,  he is one of the biggest Sheikh,  murshid and teacher.  His father also was very big murshid,  very religious scholar, alim in his time.  And you know, many people they don’t know  they come from Balkh.  It is area Balkh.  It is very far from Konya.  His father, he was Sheikh of Sultan in Balkh.  

Sultan was happy with him,  but at the end, when Sultan don’t want to listen to him,  he said, “I must go from there”.  Because his father also big awliya, told Sultan to not fight with Mongols.  Must be, ask them what they want.  But Sultan, he was proud and not listening to him,  so he said “I am leaving, you can do what you want  because I know it will be not good for people here.”  So he take his family and went to Konya  but in many places he stopped. After 7 years he arrived to Konya and many years after, in Konya, his father he passed away.  

And Mawlana, he was very connected with his father.  He was very sad.  Long time he didn’t speak to anybody until he slowly, slowly opened again.  Time of his father was where he giving speech in mosque.  All Konya people coming, listening.  Ulama, scholar, mashayikh,  they coming and listening to his father.  He was his teacher also. Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s teacher, teaching him from the books of knowledge.  All knowledge he was showing him.  Every book he was giving him exactly meaning and wisdom.  

He was in highest in knowledge around.  After his father he was the highest one.  All the ulama, they’re waiting him to give them lessons, when sheikh, but he was unhappy,  so he couldn’t do this for a long time. After slowly, slowly, he began and he was like his father.  All ulama accepting him, they are happy with him.  Everywhere was full up. You cannot find a place in mosque to listen to him.  They were coming, sitting outside also.  But he was feeling he needs more.  It was not enough for him, this knowledge, because knowledge is not enough to know,  and to be in real love with Allah.  

There must be somebody teaching.  So he was seeing in his dream, in Damascus, Shams Tabrizi.  Unfortunately, we won’t speak too much in detail but after this  Shams Tabrizi coming to Konya and meeting him there.  And he accept him to be his guide to true love.  But of course his  type of speaking, or behaving, or wearing, it was different from that area and people,  they weren’t happy with him.  And he was giving himself completely to Shams Tabrizi  and was making khalwat and speaking with him.  

Sometimes days they are not going out, only speaking. So people were not happy at all  with Shams Tabrizi.  Ulama, everybody, they are angry and said “He take our Sheikh from us.  He’s not good man.  How Mawlana following him?”  They were not happy with Shams Tabrizi.  Long story to say but  the main thing is that Mawlana  was in highest place in knowledge, in ilm.  And he was knowing the value of Shams Tabrizi  and he was not listening to anybody.  At the end of course, some people, they make Shams Tabrizi shahid and they disappear him.  Nobody can find him, where he is.  

Of course, for Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi it was a terrible thing but because he was learning from Shams Tabrizi  to accept everything, he was patient  and he put his pain  to be away from his guide, his teacher  and the most loved one in the world.  It is not easy but from teaching of Shams Tabrizi,  he was carrying this.  And he write many books. The famous one, the Mathnawi Shareef.  Mathnawi, it is real incredible book.  It is teaching and showing  the finest details in human being.  There are many stories, many wisdoms,  it is really very nice book, it is poems.  He make it in poem, more than 5,000-6,000 piece, poems.  

It is beginning from poem, speaking about bamboo because they make this ney from it.  Describing that it was in bamboo field and somebody coming, cutting it.  In this he also described himself.  After they make opening on its body to make hole.  After this they putting in oven, burning little bit.  After this it is making this  sad, nice voice coming from the ney.  First it must suffer to be different from other.  This is from his teaching, nice teaching.  Many stories also inside this book.  Some of them funny but it’s nice, very nice.  

I will speak one other.  They say one time there was one trader in one place  and he was broke, aflas,  and because people, they know him  he’s trader, so he was going here and there  and taking, saying, “I give you later”, and he don’t have money.  He couldn’t give anything but people, they were angry  and said for government “This man making this for us”.  So what they will do?  Old time there is custom.  City, old time it’s not big, maybe in one day they all can go around and tell people for this man.  

They put him on camel.  One camel, it was belonging to one Kurdish man.  They put this man on top of camel and Kurdish man, he going with him.  And another man, old time no media, so one strong voice, he was announcing to people, “O people,  this man he is broke,  don’t give him anything, if he wants, none,  or if he want something, he says “I will give you later”.  Don’t give him because you cannot get it anymore  and government not responsible for this.”  Every small street, everywhere from morning until nighttime,  they were going and this Kurdish man, the owner of camel, together.  

So it must be, everybody they hear about this man.  And night time, they said “Ok, finished.”  And say to this man “Ok, you go”. Because old time:  al muflasun la yahbasun. If anybody is broke, you cannot put him in jail.  So he want to leave and go, this Kurdish man who owned camel.  He said “Give me my wages, all day I was with you.  All day I’m tired, give me my money.”  They said, “What are you talking about? Today from morning to evening, there was this man announcing, you didn’t hear?”  

Mawlana Rumi is showing this about people who are in life. Every minute Allah gives them example,  “Don’t do this, don’t do that. Do this, do that.”  And at the end, they are coming without anything.  This is the loser, like this man.  So he is teaching millions of people.  Non-Muslims also, they are interested for this book.  They are attracted for this whirling dancing also.  Many people became Muslim also from this.  And he was real ahl al-sunnah wa l-jama’a.  He was against these pretending people.  Alhamdulillah tonight, maybe from these people  his baraka is coming on us. From his baraka also.
